What Is Coding Basics and Why Should You Care?

Call us crazy, but we think this whole computer fad might catch on.

If we’re entering a world where every company is a tech company, then it stands to reason more and more roles will have tech influence. Whether you’re into marketing, design, finance, project management, recruiting, technical writing, or online self-promotion, understanding the basics of code and web development can help.

Our Coding Basics course will not make you a web developer, but it will give you a taste of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. With that taste you’ll be able to use content management systems — like WordPress or Squarespace — to build or edit awesome websites, be able to do a little moderate coding on your own, prepare yourself for more advanced courses, and be able to better communicate with the developers in your life.

Would You Be a Good Coding Basics Person?

This course is designed for nearly anyone (who isn’t afraid of computers), but that doesn’t mean nearly everyone will want to sign up. It’s ideal for people who:

Aren’t already familiar with CSS, HTML, and JavaScript

Want to build and edit basic websites

Work in roles that are tech-adjacent

Need to be able to better understand and communicate with front-end developers

Have an interest in learning more about code and development but aren’t ready for a full bootcamp

The 4-week Coding Basics course is designed to teach you fundamental web development skills and give you a solid foundation for furthering your programming education.

You will learn the technologies that are used to create websites, including HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. On completion, you will have two projects you created, and be ready for learning paths like the Devmountain bootcamps for Data Analytics, Front-End Web Development, and Software Engineering.

Week-by-Week Coding Basics Breakdown

Gain a solid foundation of HTML tags, elements, attributes, and syntax (that’s technical talk for the correct way to write code). Once you’re comfortable with a bit of HTML, we’ll make it shine with an introduction to CSS and adding style. You can begin creating basic web pages.

Dive in a little deeper with CSS and HTML to explore things like HTML5 semantic tags. Sounds like gibberish at first but by the end of class you’ll be impressed with all the technical terms you’ve learned. We’ll end the week inspecting JavaScript and how it brings a website to life.

Learn about the fun side of CSS with positioning, animations, and transitions. Make websites dynamic with more sophisticated JavaScript, including variables, operators, objects, arrays, and functions. Learn about practical JavaScript in the Document Object Model (DOM).

Build, Build, Build. You’ll put your knowledge to work creating or adding to a site built from scratch. By the end of this week, you can have a simple web-based project to show off to friends, family, coworkers, and employers. You’ll also know enough to jump into other courses.

What Does Coding Basics Remote Learning Look Like?
